The Weimaraner — nicknamed the "Gray Ghost" for its distinctive silver-gray coat and pale, ghostly eyes — is one of the most elegant and aristocratic sporting breeds in the world, developed in the early 19th century at the court of Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar in the German state of Thuringia. The breed was created by the Weimar nobility specifically as a versatile big-game hunting dog capable of tracking and confronting large and dangerous quarry — including deer, boar, bear, and mountain lion — and was developed through careful crosses believed to include the Bloodhound, various German and French hunting breeds, and possibly the Great Dane. The Weimaraner was so prized by the German aristocracy that it was kept as an exclusive club breed for decades — the German Weimaraner Club strictly controlled breeding and ownership, and for many years it was virtually impossible for anyone outside Germany to obtain one. American sportsman Howard Knight finally gained admission to the German club and brought the first Weimaraners to the United States in 1929, though the Germans initially sent him neutered dogs to prevent American breeding. The Weimaraner's coat is its most immediately striking feature — a short, smooth, sleek coat in shades ranging from mouse-gray to silver-gray to blue-gray, always with the characteristic pale amber, gray, or blue-gray eyes that give the breed its otherworldly, penetrating gaze. The breed is also known for its exceptional intelligence, high energy, and strong desire to be with its people at all times. The Weimaraner was recognized by the AKC in 1943.
